Grammar

Verbs in -er and where you live

Most French verbs end in -er: habiter, travailler, parler, aimer. Drop the -er and add the ending: je parle, tu parles, il parle, elle parle, nous parlons, vous parlez, ils parlent. Je, tu, il and ils all sound the same, because the final -s and -ent are silent. Before a vowel or a silent h, je becomes j’: j’habite, j’aime. For places, use à with a city (à Esch, à Thionville), en with a feminine country (en France, en Allemagne) and au with a masculine country (au Luxembourg, au Portugal).

  • Elle habite à Metz, en France. She lives in Metz, in France.
  • Nous travaillons à Luxembourg et nous parlons français. We work in Luxembourg and we speak French.
  • Ils habitent à Trèves, en Allemagne. They live in Trier, in Germany.
